It Is Finished

It Is Finished

“It is finished” is rightly used to describe Jesus’ last words on the cross. How powerful, much more powerful than so many of us truly understand.  The greek word used for this phrase that Jesus utters is “tetelestai”. Don’t know greek? Neither do I, I had to look it up. Tetelestai speaks of a debt fully paid, a sentence fully served, and a battle fully won. What? Yes! “It is finished” is the end of an old season and the beginning of a new season. God was intentionally closing one chapter and opening another one. The cross of Jesus is a forever symbol of an eternal new season. Continuously new, every morning, of every day, of every week, of every month, of every year. Let that sink in! Jesus’ death is the forever promise of an old season discarded and a new season redeemed. The world was unaware of what this bloody transaction was offering to them, to their children, and ultimately their children’s children. However, three days later they would begin to understand. What’s better than the closing of an old chapter, but the glorious beginning of a new one. Out with the old and in with the new! Hallelujah! The upcoming resurrection of Jesus would forever seal this new season for all us, Amen! “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

So to you, I say, tetelestai! Your debt of sin is fully paid, the judgment for your sin has been fully served, and the spiritual war has been been completely won.
