Willie Alexander “WA” Powell, Jr., 88, the beloved husband of Edith Cribb Powell,  went home to be with the Lord and join his loved ones and dear friends, on Sunday, February 2, 2014, at Roper Hospital, Charleston.

Mr. Powell was born the son of Willie Alexander Powell, Sr. and Sallie Daniels Powell on December 19, 1925 in Williamsburg County.  He was a retired employee with International Paper Company and was an active farmer.  He was a founding member of Liberty Christian Church.  He was a man of Godly character who leaves behind a Christian legacy. He was a devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, and cherished brother. 

W.A. and Edith were married on June 21, 1947 and celebrated 66 years together.  Their home was blessed with:  four children, Jackie (Carver) Black, Jerry (Libby) Powell, Elaine (Tommy) Langston, and Ramona (Van) Moree; nine grandchildren, Carla Black, Carey Black, Jessica P. Taylor, Jeremy Powell, Daniel Langston, David Langston, Devan Moree, Gavin Moree, and Gabrielle Moree; and a great-granddaughter, Harley Taylor.  He also leaves behind:  a brother, Thomas “Mutt” (Frances) Powell; and a sister, Peggy (CL) Wheeler Cribb.

He was predeceased by:  his parents, six brothers, Edward Powell, Donald Powell, Rev. Charlie Powell, Minor Powell, Rev. H.C. “Tom” Powell, and David Powell; and five sisters, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Cannon, Kathleen Carter, Valerie Gibola, Hester Mosley, and Lucy Herring.

A Home Going Celebration with Recognition of Christian Service will be 3 PM, Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at the Earles Pentecostal Holiness Church.  Interment with Military Honors will follow in the church cemetery directed by the Andrews Chapel of  McKenzie Funeral Home.

Visitation will be 5–8 PM, Tuesday, February 4, 2014 in the Liberty Christian Church sanctuary, 1747 South Morgan Ave., Andrews.

Mr. Powell will lie-in-state at the Liberty Christian Church from 2PM Tuesday, February 4, until 12 Noon Wednesday, February 5, 2014.
