Vera Cole Ruffin, the beloved wife of Samuel James “Jimmy” Ruffin, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, March 29, 2016 surrounded by her loving family at her residence.
Mrs. Ruffin was born the daughter of John Gilbert Cole and Eunice Rush Cole on April 19, 1924 in Turbeville, SC.  She was a graduate of the Turbeville High School and the Malboro Business College.  After graduation, she began her professional career at the Charleston Naval Ship Yard; followed by the Manning Courthouse (where she met Mr. Samuel J. “Jimmy” Ruffin); and then the Olanta Citizens Bank. Vera and Jimmy were married on April 8, 1949.  In 1954, they moved to Andrews to open Ruffin’s Department Store.  In 1964, she began working as the Head Teller for South Carolina National Bank and after 25 years of service, in 1989 retired as the Assistant Branch Manager.  Vera was a devoted member of her church since 1955. Her footprints and handprints are permanently imprinted over the landscape of the Andrews First Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday School teacher for many years; spent hours as church musician playing the piano for Sunday School, Sunday Worship services, and Wednesday evening prayer meeting; sang in the Chancel Choir; and was the assistant Church Treasurer.  She was a Southern Lady whose home was her palace where she enjoyed cooking, hosting family and friends, and gardening her beautiful flowers including those annual hibiscuses in her yard.  Her greatest joy and love was spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and her cherished great-granddaughter, Henley. Though words could never fully describe all of her life, it is best written in Proverbs 31:28: “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”
Celebrating 66 years together, their home was blessed with:  two children, Ginger R. (Mike) Altman and Jim Ruffin; two grandchildren, Ryan Altman and Marianne A. (Ryan) Jordan; and a great-granddaughter, Henley Jordan. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Jo Cole.
She was predeceased by: her parents; and two brothers, Julian Cole and John Cole.
A Home Going Celebration will be 4PM, Friday, April 1, 2016 at the Andrews First Baptist Church. Internment will follow in the Andrews Memorial Cemetery directed by the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.
The Ruffin family will receive family and friends in the Andrews FBC sanctuary from 6-8 PM on Thursday evening, March 31, 2016.
