Rev. John Ervin Thames, 76,
beloved husband of Mary Harrell Thames, went home to be with the Lord,
Friday, November 2, 2018 at his residence.
Rev. Thames was born the
son of John Benjamin Thames and Annie Mayo Ivey Thames on March 9, 1942
in Manning. He was a 1960 graduate of Manning High School and received
his Bachelors degree from the University of South Carolina. He was
ordained March 13, 1977 at Manning First Baptist Church and pastored throughout
North and South Carolina and Mississippi. Rev. Thames received his
Masters of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and
a Masters and Doctorate of Theology from New Orleans Baptist Theological
Seminary. He was a United States Army Veteran where he served as Chaplain
for over 25 years. He was an Assistant Superintendent of Finance
for several school districts and continued as a consultant upon retiring.
John and Mary’s home was
blessed with four children: Vassar (Darrell) Turner, Benjamin (Ann) Thames,
Stephanie (Wilson) Cagle, and Sonia Myers; four grandchildren, Sarah Faye,
Allie, Carsen (Journey), and Jim; and a great grandson, Easton. He
also leaves behind: a brother, Bruce (Elise) Thames; and two sisters,
Patricia Baker and Brenda (Mike) Cox.
He was predeceased by his
parents; and a sister, Harriett Thames.
A Home Going Celebration
with Military Honors and Recognition of Christian Service will be 2 PM,
Monday, November 5, 2018 at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Interment
directed by the Hemingway Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home will follow in
the church cemetery.
The Thames family will receive
family and friends prior to the service from 12:30 – 1:30PM in the Family
