Col. Clark Eden Merchant, USMC (ret.),
age 89, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Tidelands
Entering the service on August 3, 1942, Clark became a Naval Aviator in the United States Marine Corps where he flew Corsairs in VMF-124 during WWII and F-9ís in VMF-311 during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 stars, the Air Medal with 6 stars as well as numerous other campaign and service medals. Clark loved being a fighter pilot and the camaraderie of his squadron mates. He retired on July 31, 1968. Clark continued to reminisce as he attended squadron reunions after leaving active duty. After retiring from the service, Clark and Ione lived in Fairfax, VA until June 2011.
Clark had his own small business and enjoyed playing golf with friends at Quantico and Fort Belvoir. They missed all their great friends and neighbors as health concerns caused a move to Pawleys Island to be close to Lynn and Glen.
A memorial service for Clark and Ione at Arlington National Cemetery will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send any expressions of love and remembrance to Tidelands Community Hospice, 2591 North Fraser Street, Georgetown, SC, 29440.
