Cpl. Powell was born the son of Felton Powell and Joyce Cox Powell-Parker on December 2, 1955 in Williamsburg County. He was a graduate of Hemingway High School and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia. He was a member of Rehobeth Pentecostal Holiness Church. Cpl. Powell was a Law Enforcement Officer for the Hemingway Police Department from December 4, 1986 until June 27, 2013; and the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office from June 28, 2013 until end of watch. He was a man of integrity, strength and honor. For it is written, “Blessed are the makers and maintainers of peace, for they will be called the sons of God.” Matthew 5:9 (Amplified)
He is survived by: his bride, Karen; two children, Alroy “Bert” Powell, II (Melissa) and Tiffany Powell Matthews (Patrick); and six grandchildren, Landon Powell, Brantley Powell, Luke Powell, Addison Matthews, Taylor Matthews, and Mallory Matthews. He is also survived by: two brothers, Larry Powell (Sharon) and Keith Powell (Nanette); a sister-in-law, Jolla Powell; numerous nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by: his parents; and a brother, Murriel Powell.
Celebration of Life Service with Recognition of Distinguish Community Service by the Williamsburg County Sheriffs Department will be 6PM, Sunday evening, August 2, 2020 at the Hemingway Campground Auditorium, Campground Road, Hemingway.
The Powell family will receive family and friends immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: S.C. Sheriff’s Association Fallen Heroes Fund, 112 Westpark Boulevard, Columbia, SC 29210.
